Minutes from NCSCA Open Meeting

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

Grimsley High School

President Doug Kidd opened the meeting at 2:55pm.

The girls who were selected to the NSCAA All-South team were read.

There was discussion about nominations for the NCSCA special awards (administrator, booking agent/official, media outlet/reporter). It was decided that nominations for these awards are to be accepted during both boys and girls seasons. Boys regional chairs will vote via email before the girls all-state meeting, then all voting will be tallied during the girls all-state meeting.

The NC/SC All-Star game has been approved and will be sanctioned by NC. It coast $250 to get the game on the agenda, and it will cost another $750 to complete the sanctioning. Mark Kadlecik and Doug Kidd will meet with the SC coaches to iron out the details. There was discussion about coaches for these games. Boys team coaches were chosen: Lee Horton, Larry Bosc, and Ben Forbes. Girls team coaches were chosen: Zack Osborne, Herk DeGraw, and Izzy Hernandez. There will be a meeting on Saturday, January 27th to select the boys & girls all-star teams. SC wants $10,000 in sponsorship to play the games. We want it to be "pay to play" like the state games. The location and date of the games are to be determined. We are looking at playing in Charlotte sometime in June.

There will be an NCSCA meeting during the NSCAA Convention in Indianapolis on Saturday, January 13th at 9:30am in Convention Center room 201. All members attending the convention are encouraged to be at this meeting.

The NCSCA will sponsor the NC Soccer Hall of Fame banquet along with the NCYSA, the adult soccer association, and the officials association. A motion was made to donate $530 to the banquet to buy a table for NCSCA coaches. The motion was approved.

An archives page has been added to the website. All members are asked to read the archives and contact Doug Kidd with any updates, or missing information.

The playoffs were discussed. Most people are tired of facing the same schools every year in the playoffs. Suggestions were made for a seeding process which would include using conference finish and overall record. The idea of "strength of schedule" was mentioned, but was not very popular. A conference rotation plan was presented (written by David Fletcher of Freedom HS, former NCSCA secretary). Further discussion about the playoffs will follow at a later date.

NCSCA Summer Meeting

Greensboro Coliseum

July 17th at 3:45

President Doug Kidd opened the meeting with 2 jamboree announcements.

President Kidd then announced that the purpose of this meeting was to get input from coaches about concerns, or changes, that we would like to present to the NCHSAA through the NCCA.  He stressed that the current changes (from 3-whistle to traditional and yellow card reset for playoffs) were made because we presented them through the proper channels.  The NCSCA got input from coaches, presented these concerns to Mac Morris of the NCCA, who brought them before the NCHSAA Board.  Coaches are discouraged from making phone calls, sending letters, and sending emails to the NCHSAA as individuals.  This only angers the NCHSAA board members.  If we want changed to help make NC soccer better, then we must always follow the proper channels.

After this announcement, the meeting was open for coaches to voice concerns.  The following topics were discussed as items the NCSCA should present to the NCHSAA Board:

President Kidd then discussed the following general topics:

At this time, the open meeting was adjourned and a board meeting took place immediately after (approx. 4:15pm).  President Kidd presented the following items to all regional chairs and officers:

·        Ray Alley of the Southern Soccer Scene has still not received addresses from every region.  He is getting very upset about this.  One of our membership benefits is a free subscription to this publication, so all regional chairs must get Ray the addresses of each member in that region immediately.

·        A list of potential coaches was selected for the East-West All Star games.

·        Regional chairs were asked to check their regional alignment and to update any changes.

·        A standardized format for All-Region teams was approved.  Each region will select an All-Region team of at least 22, but no more than 33 players.  Each NCSCA member is guarantee a player on the All-Region team.

·        A list of the top 10 “Player to Watch” was selected.

·        A decision was made to have a coach’s clinic in conjunction with the boys All-State Awards ceremony in December.  Time and location will be announced.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 5:15pm.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Chuck Davis, NCSCA Secretary

NCSCA Spring meeting and All-State selection

Sunday, May 7th, 2006

Guilford County Schools Central Office Building

President Doug Kidd opened the meeting at 10:00am.  After his welcoming remarks, voting took place for the All-State team as follows:  goalkeepers, player of the year, NSCAA All-South, field-players, coaches of the year, and honor awards for AD/Administrator, booking agent/official, and media outlet/person.

While the vote were being counted, the following items from the agenda were discussed:

·        NCSCA Clinic and All-State Award Ceremony

o       Due to low attendance, there will only be one clinic for NCSCA members during the fall in conjunction with the boy’s All-State Awards Ceremony.  In the spring, there will only be an All-State Awards Ceremony for the girls, and no clinic.

o       The girl’s All-State Awards Ceremony will be held in the Grimsley HS auditorium on June 3rd at 3:00pm.

·        NC/SC All-Star game

o       SC wants $10,000 to proceed with the game.  They don’t want players to have to pay.  All expenses covered.

o       We suggest charging a fee to play (like the NCCA East/West All-Star games) to at least get the games started.  All revenue could then be put toward next summer’s games.

o       It was suggested that we seek sponsorship.

·        Regional Chairs

o       All new regional chairs were approved.

o       Chairs were asked to update their membership information and forward it to Ray Alley so he can issue subscriptions to Southern Soccer Scene.

o       Each Chair must email Doug Kidd a copy of their All-Region team in alphabetical order by position to be posted on the website.  A 1st team All-Region list must also be sent, but will not be posted.

o       Chairs were asked to help update the school/coach contact list and send any new information to Chuck Davis.

·        Release of All-State team

o       The All-State team will be released after the state championships.

·        Rankings

o       Rankings Committee chair Rob Wilcher expressed his disappointment with the lack of participation on www.eurosportscoreboard.com.

o       Teams will not be ranked if they do not post their scores on the scoreboard!

o       Regional chairs and officers were asked to help get the word out.

·        Private Schools

o       In order not to conflict with the NCSCA All-State team, the private schools were asked to rename their All-State team.  Chuck Carter of the Asheville School will be contacted about the change.

o       Oasis Shrine is sponsoring a NC/SC Private School All-Star game similar to the Shrine Bowl.  Concerns about conflicts with the NCSCA attempts to start a NC/SC All-Star game were expressed.

o       There was a suggestion to “piggy back” the private schools game with the public school game.

The meeting was adjourned at 2:15pm.

Minutes taken by Brian Jillings and submitted by Chuck Davis.

The boys All-State Awards ceremony will be held on Saturday, December 3rd at 1:00pm in conjunction with a NCSCA coach’s clinic. Further details will follow.

All-Region teams are to be listed alphabetically by position with name, year, and school, and then emailed to Doug Kidd. This information will be posted AFTER the playoffs.

Regional chairs need to keep up with membership in their region and update Ray Alley at the Southern Soccer Scene. NCSCA members will once again receive a free subscription.

There was discussion about issues we will present to the NCHSAA Board of Directors: 1A girls want a separate playoff; 2 options for a new playoff system, a) seeding by a seeding committee b) 64 teams with a predetermined bracket; elimination of the 3-whistle system; resetting of yellow cards for playoffs.

All members present were asked to encourage coaches to do a better job of updating the Eurosport Scoreboard website.

Todd Worley of Sanderson High School mentioned that the state might consider pushing the start of spring sports back a week. This would probably coincide with pushing back the start of winter sports.

The 66 All-State selections were revealed, along with the coaches of the year for each classification. This information will be released to the media after the playoffs.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 2:00pm.

Minutes from the July 19th, 2005 summer meeting in Greensboro

The 2005 Summer meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association was held on Tuesday, July 19th at the Greensboro Coliseum at 2:50pm in conjunction with the North Carolina Coaches Association Annual Clinic.

First, a general meeting was held for all high school soccer coaches who are current members of the NCSCA, or who wish to join the NCSCA.  President Doug Kidd of Watauga High School opened the meeting by introducing himself, welcoming everyone, explaining the benefits of joining NCSCA, and talking about the association website, www.ncsca.org.

There was discussion about the NC/SC All-Star soccer games.    Doug Kidd and Mark Kadlecik of East Chapel Hill have met with the South Carolina Coaches and the target date is June 17th, 2006.  The games are open to nominations of graduating seniors and coaches who are NCSCA members.  People with ideas for sponsors were asked to contact Kadlecik.

A survey sheet was distributed to collect coach’s’ name, their school name, email addresses, preference between the 3-whistle system or traditional 3-man system, and to vote for/against the resetting of yellow cards for playoffs.  This documentation will be given to Mac Morris to present at the next NC High School Athletic Association board meeting.

Coaches asked for a description of the resetting process.  It was stated that players with 4, or less cards, for the season be reset for playoffs.

Eurosportscoreboard.com by Soccer Information Systems was discussed, and coaches were encouraged to register and keep their schedules and results updated.

The expansion of the 3A and 4A playoffs to 64 teams was discussed, and coaches agreed to pursue the matter since basketball will also petition for the same expansion.

The possible elimination of the East-West All-Star games from the NCCA Clinic was discussed.  The NCCA board almost voted the games out due to an apparent lack of organization on the part of coaches.  All coaches were encouraged to follow the timelines and agendas set for the games and to stay in constant contact with players selected.

David Whitman of Blue Ridge Soccer was recognized.  He announced the Blue Ridge Soccer Jamboree for boys this fall held in Hickory on August 13th.

The floor was open for discussion.

Larry Bosc of East Mecklenburg High School asked when the new playoff format was decided on, and if anyone had been told of the new format.  Doug Kidd said that the format was not mentioned at the February meeting of NCSCA and NCHSAA.

John Teller of Hoggard High School asked about the selection of teams for wildcard berths.  It was explained that overall record only will determine what teams receive the wildcard berths.

There was discussion about the split of 1A and 2A into seperate playoff brackets for the girls season.  It was emphasized that all 1A and 2A coaches contact the NCHSAA board to petition for the split.

Jim Pielow of Northeast Guilford High School brought up the 64 team playoff expansion and asked how we will pursue the matter.  It was determined that the order of our agenda was to eliminate the 3-whistle system, get yellow cards reset for playoffs, then expand the playoffs to 64 teams.

George Kennedy of Western Guilford High School reminded all National Soccer Coaches Association of America member of the upcoming deadlines for team/individual awards registration, and all coaches were encouraged to join the NSCAA.

Mark Kadlecik asked to have eurosportscoreboard.com updated with the new conference realignment.

The general meeting was closed by Doug Kidd.

An NCSCA board meeting was held immediately after.

President Doug Kidd announced that the NCCA will rely on NCSCA to choose 10 coaches from the east and 10 coaches from the west to nominate for future all-star games.  Criteria for coaching these games is as follows:  must be an NCCA member (not associate member), has to be 5 years since last coaching in the all-star games, and must have 10 years experience to be recycled.

Rob Wilcher of T. C. Roberson High School, the Rankings Committee Chair, was approved to become a voting board member.

It was announced that FoxSoccer.com wanted a list of the top 5 teams in NC and a list of players to watch during the boys season.

The top 5 teams were discussed.

The players to watch were discussed.

A list of 10 east and 10 west coaches for the all-star games was compiled.

                 The rankings were discussed.

The meeting was adjourned at approximately 4:30 pm.

Minutes respectfully submitted by Chuck Davis, NCSCA Secretary.

Minutes from the May 15th, 2005 Spring Meeting in Greensboro

The 2005 Spring Meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association was held on Sunday, May 15th at the Guilford County Schools Administration Building beginning at 10:00 A.M.

Myers Park assistant coach Ed Young opened the meeting with an announcement of the formation of a group called NSCAA Soccer Ambassadors, a group of people with a past involvement in soccer, who are non-soccer professionals now, but want to actively support the development of soccer in the United States. They also want to act as a support group and advocate for the coaches. Some literature was handed out about the soccer ambassadors group.

President Doug Kidd sought collection of the All-South, All-American, and National Coach of the Year forms.

Brent Walston talked about a soccer fundraiser event called "The Brittany" in honor of a former soccer player at Wilson Hunt who was tragically murdered last summer. The event, which started in the spring, and will continue in August, and twice annually, is open to any high school teams looking for games at a great soccer complex in Wilson, NC. The Brittany Willis Scholarship Soccer Showcase information is available at the website, www.thebrittany.org.

The voting for all-state goalkeepers was called for.

The voting for all-south and state player of the year was called for.

The voting for all-state was called for.

Doug Kidd read the minutes from the winter meeting of the NSCAA convention in Baltimore and they were approved.

Old business was discussed:

A NCSCA Hall of Fame honor or recognition was discussed and approved

Lifetime achievement awards were suggested

Coaches only was proposed and approved as a criterion for admission into said honorary organization

The name North Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame was proposed and approved

A committee consisting of Patrick Gladys from AC Reynolds, Mark Kadlecik from East Chapel Hill, and David Miller from Jacksonville was set up to outline required criteria for entry into the NCHSSCHOF.

Tim Guter gave the Treasury report and it was decided that we can afford to purchase banners for the all-state awards ceremony and coaches clinic

It was emphasized that the players attending the all-state awards ceremony dress appropriately

The clinic and awards ceremony was announced to be held at Grimsley High School in Greensboro at 1:30 on June 4, 2005 for the clinic. There will be approximately 3 coaches presenting sessions. The awards ceremony will follow at 5:00, also at Grimsley High school.

The new NCSCA logo was approved.  Michelle Hinson was awarded $100 for her winning submission.

David Miller of Jacksonville was placed in charge of getting banners with the newly approved logo for the clinic and awards ceremony

Tim Guter of New Bern suggested that the region chairs and officers wear NCSCA polo shirts for the clinic and awards ceremony. Regional chairs and officers need to email Tim Guter with their sizes ASAP

Guest speakers for the awards ceremony were discussed

There was a discussion of the best site for the NC/SC All-Star Game. SAS has expressed interest in hosting the game. Wofford was still thought to be the most geographically neutral site. Mark Kadlecik will talk to SC coaches and make a determination.

Doug Kidd suggested a representation on the all-state team for at least one player from all-classifications as 1A players in particular might get slighted due to a lack of exposure. Several coaches thought that this could cost worthy players from larger schools a spot on the all-state team. The coaches were against automatic inclusion on the all-state for at least one player from all classifications.

Tim Guter suggested adding "classification" to the membership form as a means of trying to determine how many coaches from each classification are members of the association. This was approved.

New Regional Chairs were approved:

Region 2- Needs to fill a spot

Region 4- Jeremiah Mattingly of South View

Region 7- Jim Pielow of Northeast Guilford for the boys & girls

Region 10- Jim Lynch of South Mecklenburg for the girls

Region 11- Cam Ormsby for the girls

A motion was passed to amend the Constitution to allow the following criteria for region chairs and officers:

An officer must be a head coach in either the boys or the girls season, and a regional chair must be a coach (head or assistant) in that season.

A new officer position was proposed, Chairman of the Ranking Committee, and passed

Rob Wilcher of TC Roberson was nominated for the position of Ranking Chairman with voting privileges at the state meeting. This was tabled pending further discussion.

Motion to expand the polls for 3A and 4A to top 15 was passed over one objection. 1A, 2A, & Private will remain a top 10 poll.

The purchase of a digital camera was approved with a spending limit of $300.

Southern Soccer Scene will continue to be sent to our members.

Region chairs need to do a better job of updating contact information for members in their region and get that information to Ray Alley of Southern Soccer Scene.

The selection of all-state was completed

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by Coach Kidd of Watauga.

Respectfully submitted by Patrick Gladys, AC Reynolds High School

The following minutes are from the January 15th, 2005 Winter meeting held in Greensboro NC:

An open meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association was held at 9:30 AM on Saturday, January 15, 2005, in Baltimore, Maryland, in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's annual convention. President Doug Kidd presided with between 15-20 coaches in attendance, including at least 8 officers.

A motion to provide all NCSCA members with a complimentary subscription to Southern Soccer Scene was approved.

A review of the 2004 Boys All-State Awards Ceremony and the Coaches' Clinic was given. It was suggested that we buy banners to use for the awards ceremony and that we try to do some outdoor sessions with the clinic.

The NCYSA convention and N.C. Soccer Hall of Fame ceremony will be held on Saturday, February 12th, 2005, in Greensboro. Bob Vroom will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Our association has been issued 8 free tickets for the ceremony and if anyone is interested in using them, please contact Doug Kidd. We need to keep updating our list of suggestions for hall of fame inductees from the high school ranks.

An update was given on the North Carolina/South Carolina all-star game. Wofford is interested in hosting the event and Eurosport is interested in some sort of sponsorship. We still need to set a date! The insurance will run only about $300.00. We are shooting for starting next summer (2006). It would be nice to have some sort of reception for the coaches and players, perhaps similar to, but on a smaller scale, what is done for the East/West players and coaches.

A report was given on our use of Soccer Information Systems' internet scoreboard. Any questions, problems, etc. should be emailed to them. We will be tying into the National Scoreboard which is currently in the process of starting up.

The NC State Games Jr./Sr. Soccer Showcase will be held on Saturday and Sunday, June 18th and 19th, 2005 at the SAS Soccer Park Stadium.

A request was made that we set our meeting dates earlier. It was decided that the all-state meeting for the girls will be Sunday, May 15, 2005, and the the Coaches Clinic/All-State Awards Ceremony will be on Saturday, June 4, 2005.

It was agreed that we need to have some of our members talk face to face with representatives of the NCHSAA and that we try to get members David Hicks and Brent Walston, who are both soccer coaches and ADs, as well as booking agent Roger Morton involved in that meeting. Doug Kidd read a letter from the NCHSAA explaining why we didn't get some of the changes our associaiton has requested. Many coaches present urged that we improve the system of tracking yellow/red cards and get rid of the 3 whistle system.

Playoff seeding was discussed. Concern was expressed about the possibility of playing conference opponents in early rounds of the playoffs. Could we shift conference match-ups in the playoffs each year? We would like to expand to 64 teams in 3A and 4A.

Do we want the state assigning officials? The consensus at this meeting was NO, we do not!

Communication between club and high school soccer was brought up. Most present said it needs to be dealt with on an individual basis and it was suggested that the coach talk to the DOC of the club if there is concern.

We need to wait a year or two to see if we are financially stable enough to help NCSCA members get a discount for NSCAA membership.

We probably couldn't afford to give free for life memberships to long time members, plus tracking would be difficult.

Information about our logo contest will be sent out online and judging will be in the spring.

The NSCAA is considering expanding rankings to large school, small school, private school. All present thought that would be a good idea. Brian Jillings is on that NSCAA committee.

Rob Wilcher asked about the possibility of a NCSCA Hall of Fame or an Honor Award similar to what the national association does. We would have to be careful what we called it so as not to infringe on other groups' territory. All present agreed that something like this should be done and an official vote will be taken in the spring.

We will check on NCSCA regional alignment and any changes that might need to be made in the spring.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned by Coach Kidd.

Respectfully submitted,

David Fletcher

NCSCA Secretary

The following minutes are from the December 11th, 2004 Clinic meeting held in Greensboro NC:

An open meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association was held on Saturday, December 11, 2004, at Grimsley High School in Greensboro in conjunction with the NCSCA's Fall Coaches' Clinic with NCSCA President Doug Kidd presiding.

NCSCA Treasurer Tim Guter reported we had roughly $12,500.00 in our account presently. We experienced a large membership increase this fall. This balance does not reflect our expenses for the boys season - mostly for plaques for the all-state team and coaches of the year. We are in good shape financially according to Coach Guter.

NCSCA Secretary David Fletcher discussed a proposal to expand the number of teams in the NCHSAA state playoffs for each classification. The consensus of those present was that both 3A and 4A state playoffs in boys and girls soccer be expanded to 64 teams each while both 1A and 2A would be separate in boys and girls and each have 32 teams in the state playoffs.

Tim Guter raised the issue of how officials are chosen for NCHSAA state playoff games. He stated that the state assigns officials for football and basketball, and maybe we need to take a look at how they are assigned in soccer.

Mark Kadlecik suggested we meet with officials from CASL about conflicts between club and high school soccer. All present agreed that better communication between both sides is needed.

Mark Kadlecik reported that the North Carolina/South Carolina all-star game is on hold until 2006, but progress is being made. He is looking into possible sponsorship and the insurance is in place and will not be a prohibitive cost. One thing that must be decided soon is a date - not an easy task given all that goes on in the summer.

A representative from ATC Soccer Network spoke to the group about opportunities to take teams to Europe or the Caribbean for one week summer tournaments. The typical cost is between $2000 and $2700 per player. For more information, log onto www.ATCSOCCERNETWORK.com

Chip Stone reported that the clinic was going well. All present agreed that these clinics are worthwhile and informative.

John Teller brought up the idea that the NC State Games Soccer Showcase all-star games for rising juniors and senios were not attracting top players and perhaps the format should be changed so that entire high school teams could enter a tournament format similar to what some of the other sports do.

Herk DeGraw brought up several points: (1) Should we try to arrange a discount for our members to join the National Association?

(2) Could we make NCSCA membership free for life after a certain number of years as a member had passed? (3) Could we get some kind of attire for NCSCA officers?

Finally, the need for a NCSCA logo was discussed and it was decided to sponsor a statewide student contest to try to get an appropriate logo.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,

David Fletcher

NCSCA Secretary

The following minutes are from the May 16th, 2004 Spring meeting held in Greensboro NC:

The 2004 Spring Meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association was held on Sunday, May 16 at the Guilford County Schools Administration Building beginning at 10:00 AM.

Minutes of the winter meeting held during the NSCAA convention in Charlotte w ere read and approved.

Jeff Costa from Terry Sanford High School in Region 4 reported on the new way Region 4 conducted their regional meeting. There were some positives to the new method of breaking the meeting up by classification as well as some negatives. The meeting did take longer than usual. The general consensus seemed to be this is a method to continue considering.

It was decided to NOT rank keepers in with field players on the all-region teams. We may need to amend the constitution to reflect this.

Tim Guter gave the Treasurer's report and reported we are not in great shape financially. Expenses have been especially high this year as we incurred extra expenses associated with the NSCAA convention being in Charlotte. A long discussion followed concerning awarding certificates rather that plaques for all-state players. Plaques and certificates would be awarded to state coaches of the year, the state player of the year, and regional players of the year. Special awards? Should we give 2 certificates - one for the player and one for the school? Finally, a motion passed to award 1 certificate for this spring's banquet and also give plaques as outlined above. The issue will be revisited in the fall.

The following coaches were recommended to be nominated for the NSCAA High School Long Term Achievement Award:

Bob Catapano from Sanderson

Zack Osborne from Page

David Sanford from High Poing Wesleyan

The following coaches were recommended to be nominated for the North Carolina Soccer Hall of Fame:

Lee Horton from Charlotte Latin

Herk DeGraw from Grimsley

Ray Fumo from Parkwood

Larry Bosc from East Mecklenburg

Bob Vroom from Swansboro

Patrick Gladys of AC Reynolds was approved to be the new Region 12 chair for the 2004-2005 school year (boys & girls).

Continuing the NCSCA social at future NSCAA conventions was approved if costs can be cut. Different ways of cutting costs will be explored. It was felt that this is an important opportunity for high school coaches to make contacts with college coaches especially.

The following recommendations are to be forwarded to the NCHSAA:

(1) No 3 whistle system

(2) Reset yellow cards for the playoffs

(3) Neutral sites for the regionals in the state playoffs

The first NCSCA Clinic was discussed. It will be free to anyone who wants to come. We cannot afford hotel rooms for clinicians this spring, but hope to be able to do that at future clinics. Tim Guter will look into providing players for sessions.

Approval was given to continue to pursue a North Carolina/South Carolina All-Star game for next summer. Areas than must be addressed include:

Talking to the NCHSAA to get it sanctioned

Insurance

Dates

Sites

Hotels

Practices

Cost to the NCSCA

SPONSORSHIP

Soccer Information Systems was approved to install a scoreboard for the 2004-2005 school year. The NCSCA will pay for every school to be on board.

The selection of the all-state was completed

The following minutes are from the June 16th, 2004 Clinic meeting held in Greensboro NC:

Minutes from the open meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association held during the NCSCA's first coaches clinic at Grimsley High School on Saturday, June 16:

Minutes from the board's spring meeting were read.

Kenneth Simmons, head coach at Lumberton High School, reported on Region 4's spring regional meeting where the coaches divided up by classification at the meeting. He said there were some kinks, but he felt it was an idea worth pursuing.

Soccer Information Systems has selected North Carolina as one of two states to receive its Scoreboard service free of charge for the upcoming year. Work will be done this summer to get the system up and running and connected to our web site. Every school will get a password and will be able to be a part of the scoreboard.

The 3 whistle system was discussed.

Doug Kidd, NCSCA president, asked those in attendance how we might be able to get more small schools to join our association.

Some of the reasons why people from smaller schools haven't joined included:

(1) They feel they have a lack of representation for themselves and their players

(2) Many smaller schools don't have soccer or are just now getting it

Suggestions to increase small school membership included:

(1) Maybe do a 1A/2A all-state team and a 3A/4A team

(2) Perhaps assign a certain number of spots on the all-state team for each classification based on percentage of membership in the NCSCA (similar to what the national association does with its all-region and all-American teams).

(3) Can membership costs be cut? Should we eliminate the banquet and instead do an awards ceremony, perhaps in conjunction with the clinic for coaches? That would eliminate a tremendous amount of overhead! The clinic could be a one day event that culminates with the awards ceremony.

Other comments about the all-state team included a proposal that the team be better proportioned by position. It was felt that defenders are frequently under-represented on the team. Also, should the player's team's strength of schedule be a factor in determining all-state selections?

It was suggested that a survey be passed out at the NCCA clinic in Greensboro during the rules meeting asking such questions as, "What would it take to get you to join the association?"

The possibility of the State Games moving to 8 teams was discussed and many felt that would be a good thing because it would give exposure to more kids.

Information

Presenters at the clinic included: Zack Osborne of Page High School, Marc Calderone of North Mecklenburg High School, Lennox Charles of Polk County High School, Doug Kidd of Watauga High School, David Fletcher of Freedom High School, Izzy Hernandez of Broughton High School, and Lee Horton of Charlotte Latin. David Whitman, a North Carolina High School Referee Assignor, also met with the group to discuss issues involving coaches, players, and officials. The clinic ran from Saturday morning through Sunday morning and concluded with the girls all-state banquet on Sunday afternoon.

The following minutes are from the July 20th, 2004 NCCA meeting held in Greensboro NC:

Minutes from the open meeting of the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association held during the NCCA coaching clinic in Greensboro, NC on Tuesday, July 20, 2004.

The meeting was very well attended, perhaps the most coaches ever for an open meeting of the NCSCA. The room was probably 2/3 full and the meeting immediately followed the rules meeting given by Carolyn Shannonhouse of the NCHSAA.

NCSCA president Doug Kidd opened the meeting with the following remarks:

(1) A review of the association's first ever coaches clinic was given and coaches were encouraged to attend future clicics.

(2) A report was given on the scoreboard service that will be available to every school via the NCSCA web site. We will not have to pay for this service this school year.

(3) We are moving forward with the plan for a North Carolina/South Carolina all-star game. Doug Kidd has talked to the NCHSAA and has gotten positive feedback about the game being sanctioned as long as it does not conflict with the East/West games.

(4) A reminder was made about our web site and what is on it.

(5) We are having a membership push to try to get closer to 100% participation. Coach Kidd asked if there were any suggestions about how to increase membership and no one offered any.

Coach Kidd then opened up the meeting to suggestions from the floor for rules changes that were voted on and will be passed along to the NCHSAA:

(1) Mrs. Shannonhouse had asked us to discuss the possibility of granting an additional 3 yellow cards (in terms of suspension) to players at the beginning of the state playoffs if they had accumulated no more than 3 or 4 yellow cards throughout the entire regular season. The vast majority of coaches present favored this proposal as long as it applied only to players who had NOT reached the 5 card mark during the regular season. Only 5 coaches voted against the measure.

(2) The group unanimously supported asking the NCHSAA to go to a 64 team playoff format to begin with the new realignment. Much concern was expressed that with the number of combination conferences, unless we go to 64 teams, many teams will not get a fair chance to make the playoffs.

(3) All but one coach voted for a proposal to ask the NCHSAA to spread out conference teams in the state playoffs so they won't meet in the second round. It was felt that this might be easier if we go to 64 teams.

(4) The group unanimously favored a proposal to split the 1A/2A playoffs in girls, even if it means going to fewer teams making the playoffs in those classifications as was done when the boys were first split up.

(5) All but one coach voted in favor of a proposal to ask the NCHSAA to move the regional finals (state semifinals) to neutral sites.

A question was raised for the NCHSAA about starting times for seasons for next school year - how will they be affected by the recently enacted state law concerning the school calendar? The seasons were discuss and some felt we should extend the spring season or start it later. Starting the spring season in the middle of February and starting to play 2 weeks later sometimes puts mountain teams in the position of not being outside at all or for only a few days for practice by the time they have to start playing.

Most coaches seemed not to be in favor of reducing the total number of games allowed in order to shorten the season.

Concern was expressed about allowing private schools to join the NCHSAA. One person suggested we let them in only if they agree to play in one classification higher than their numbers indicate. For example, a private school whose numbers put them in the 3A classification would have to play 4A. That might even out the competition and ease the concerns of public school coaches.

There being no further business, Coach Kidd adjourned the meeting.
